Due to confidentiality, I can't post pictures or go into heavy detail about my global capstone experience. However I would like to heavily talk about the global experiences I had. As part of FIU Social Work, and part of the CSWE requirements, I had to do a 2 semester 500+ hour field placement with a social work agency in Miami. I was placed in an agency with Miami-Dade County and immediately my understanding of how to navigate global perspectives around me became important. I had to analyze ethical dilemmas through cultural lenses. I even had a client who spoke a certain dialect that no one had access to a translator to. As someone who was working to be a case manager I had to understand the underlying privilege, political and social institutions of oppression as well. Understanding culture, perspective and leadership was key to each client interaction. There was no room to accidentally be disrespectful. Making sure each referral was respectful of each family was important. Giving a client a referral to a counseling center where the therapist may not be cultural or personal match was something that could stop care or put someone at risk. I am very grateful for my capstone, and the experiences that I had that taught me to understand the culture around me because I would have struggled to give my clients the best care possible.

I was an intern for about 6 months, and I contributed close to 700 hours to my field placement requirements. I also completed 70+ hours of training.
