Part of my global learning experience was global learning in an academic sphere. Through my majors and certificate I completed 4 courses that were meant to expand my world view. Each course had it's own experience and challenges in my learning, expanded upon below.

  • SOW 3233 Social Welfare Policy Social Work

    • In this course students learn about policy and it's impact on society, communities, and social work. The most memorable, and thought provoking conversation that came out of this course was the discussion of Ferguson. The professor helped up dissect what underlying and current policies in place contributed to the riots that had taken place. The discussion then delved into international examples that mirrored what was happening in the U.S.

  • SOW 3620 Social Work and Human Diversity Social Work

    • This course was interesting in itself because of the deep exploration of how cultures around the world view mental health care, and how to overcome each barrier each individual may face in the field. There was an adoption project that required a deeper insight into each learning competency. I was assigned a partner and we were told to 'adopt a child' and explain how to raise them with an understanding of their culture or disability. My child was a child born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Depending on the origin of information given, the care and child-rearing technique was different for each area and it was dizzying to sort through the best and most supportive way to raise our child.

  • WST 3641 LGBT and Beyond: Non-Normative Sexuality in Global Perspective

    • LGBT and Beyond as a course is incredible when it comes to attacking LGBTQIA issues internationally and locally. Despite education on the history of LGBT individuals, there is discussion and dissection that forces each student to move out of their comfort zone when looking at current issues facing the community. Regardless of one's personal view, the lessons learned broadened my perspective on international LGBT communities. Examination of how economically, socially and legally and LGBT individual can be impacted in Israel was eye opening.

  • WST 3015 Introduction to Global Gender and Women's Studies

    • This was my first women and gender studies course and my favorite overall. Instead of just focusing on feminist theory, men's issues, international and historical perspectives took the driver seat. I learned more about issues facing all of these communities in this course than I have learned in any of my political activism.
